'Leathery Creature' is a pattern that can be added to any Creature, hereafter referred to as the base creature. Leathery adds a tough outer layer to a creature, be it thick skin, layers of callous or scar-tissue, a full suit of well-worn chainmail, a thick rubbery layer of ectoplasm or a layer of debris (brush, coals, gravel, etc) which has been crusted onto their surface. 'Leathery Creature' is a pattern that can be added to any Creature, hereafter referred to as the base creature. In all cases, their ugly, scabrously-tough appearance indicates that they are quite a bit more durable than you'd expect.
A Leathery Creature uses all of the base creature's statistics and abilities except as noted below.
CR (challenge rating)
Same as base creature +1.
Size and Type
The creature's Size and Type do not change.
Initiative Modifier
The creature's initiative modifier increases +1.
Senses
No changes.
Armor Class
Leathery Creatures gain +1 AC. This is granted by adding to the base creatures natural armor bonus.
Hit Dice
No changes.
Defensive Ability
A Leathery Creature gains the following abilities, which may be added to their Bestiary entry:
Special Defenses: DR(CR)/Common, ER(CR)/Common
Special Abilities: Leathery Creatures are often old, dangerous specimens of their kind. They are dried out, tough, and leathery, their flesh hardened by time and battles against all types of harm. Leathery Creatures gain DR/Common and ER/Common equal to their adjusted CR.
Speed
A Leathery Creature's base speed improves by ten feet in all movement categories it has.
Melee Attacks
A Leathery Creature retains all the base creature's attacks, and its weapon and armor proficiencies. These attacks retain the same primary or secondary status they had for the base creature. A Leathery Creature adds 1d6 of laceration (physical, rare) damage to all its melee attacks after its adjusted CR (challenge rating) reaches CR9.
