Condition Severity: Strong

Effects

  • Unconscious creatures are knocked out, fall prone and become helpless. Unconsciousness can result from having negative hit points, or from non-lethal damage in excess of current hit points. Unconscious includes all the penalties of Helpless, including susceptibility to coup-de-grace attacks.
  • Unconscious characters cannot take any actions except some free actions (such as saving throws), though some free actions are simply not possible (such as speaking). The GM is the final arbiter of which free actions are permitted.
  • Generally, monsters die upon reaching negative hit points, rather than becoming unconscious. PC's die when their negative hit points exceed their level plus their CON score (not modifier).

Ended By

If the ability, trap, or effect description includes specific directions for how the condition is ended, then that is the primary means of ending this condition. In many cases, it is the only way to end the condition. If nothing is specifically listed for ending the condition, then the following methods can be used to end it, instead:

  • Any healing received which increases hit points to a positive amount ends the Unconscious condition, though the character is still Prone.
  • Unconscious does not end automatically at the end of the encounter.
