Hosteling (Shield Magic Property)
A shield with this special ability hides living creatures or mounts within its iconography to keep it safe. The wearer can speak a command word to magically store an animal companion, a familiar, or mount. The stored creature or mount appears as a symbol emblazoned upon the shield, either one that mimics the appearance of the creature or that is more symbolic and abstract.
While stored, the creature is sleeping and provides the wearer no benefit. There is no size limit on the mount, familiar, or companion that can be stored, and the wielder may store up to three such creatures in the shield with this property. In addition, the wielder may spend 10,000 gp to increase the number of creatures storable in this item by +1, and you may purchase this as many times as you wish. Stored creatures (or mounts) do not need to be associated with the wielder but they cannot be hostile; you can store your friends' mounts, but you can't slurp up a pack of Hell Hounds just to get them out of your way.
A second command word releases the stored creature from the hosteling shield. A released creature immediately awakens, appears in a space adjacent to the wearer, and can take actions on the round it appears.
Because the stored creature is sleeping rather than in suspended animation (or even hibernating), it ages and gets hungry at the normal rate while stored. A hosteling shield automatically releases a stored creature after a full night's rest (or 24 hours, whichever is sooner).
- Creation: Creator (Feat), Bailiwick Check (DC 30), a pale remnant (tier 2), and an item symbolic of the enchantment.
