Special Abilities
Intimidating Presence (Su, Aura) |
The first time in an encounter that any rage drake ends its move adjacent to an enemy, that enemy must make a Will save, DC or become Shaken until the end of the encounter. Once a creature succeeds on this save, they may not be affected by this rage drake's Intimidating Presence ability again for 24 hours. If the Drake does not move or take a 5-foot step, Intimidating Presence does not trigger. |
Pack Ferocity (Ex) |
If a Rage Drake attacks while it is adjacent to any other creature it considers an ally, its innate ferocity grants it a + rage bonus to all its damage rolls. This bonus does not stack with itself, regardless of how many allies are within range. |
Drake's Rage (Ex) |
Once per encounter as a swift action, a Rage Drake may fly into a berserk, killing frenzy. Drake's Rage lasts until the Rage Drake is killed or the end of the encounter. While under the effects of Drake's Rage, it gains temporary hit points equal to twice its Hit Dice (Expression error: Unexpected * operator.) and gains the Ripping Riposte ability (see below). |
Ripping Riposte (Ex) |
While under the effect of Drakes Rage, up to once per round, the Rage Drake may make one Claw attack (see above) as an immediate reaction against any attacker that successfully damages it in any way and is within its reach. This is in addition to any attacks of opportunity the Rage Drake may have (which are bite attacks). |
Tail Slap (Ex) |
During a full attack action in which it makes all its attacks against a single foe, a Rage Drake may also elect to make a Tail Slap attack against that same target as a swift action. This attack is made against the target's AC at + to hit. If it hits, it does of bludgeoning (physical) damage and the struck foe must make a Reflex save, DC , or be knocked Prone. Tail Slap cannot inflict critical hits. |
Rage Drake
Drakes are reptilian beasts that compete in the wild against wolves, bears, and other modest predators. They are omnivores when required (although they prefer meat) and their slow, efficient metabolisms mean an amazing number of them can live in a given area.
- An attack by a pack of Rage Drakes is a serious threat, even to a town garrison, and must be faced firmly. It is common to see permanent bounties posted for Rage Drakes, so that all travellers in the wild will be rewarded for thinning them out. It is a dangerous bounty to collect.
- Large, dangerous creatures that are intimidating to face even for seasoned warriors, Rage Drakes are often mistaken as small dragons by the uneducated. Given the ferocity of their pack attacks, perhaps such mistakes are justifiable. Rage Drakes are hardy and adapt readily to harsh conditions, and will flourish almost anywhere if given the time to prey and browse efficiently. Rage Drakes are very territorial, and will viciously attack all creatures they see as challenges to their territorial range.
Combat Tactics
Rage Drakes are pack hunters who hunt by sight. They are quite smart, and are perfectly aware of their intimidating presence and pack ferocity, and will try to stay in a tight knot or pair up as they attack to maximize the bonuses they gain. Once in a fight, they will charge in, using Drake's Rage to fortify themselves against any ranged damage they have to endure while closing in. Once they engage in melee, they will use full attacks, attacks of opportunity, and Ripping Riposte to tear their prey to pieces. If they use a full attack, they will spin in place like a top, using their Tail Slap to try and knock their foes to the ground where they can be finished off.
- Rage Drakes are completely fearless once they have spotted prey, and once they've triggered Drake's Rage nothing will cause them to break off an attack.
Out of Combat
Rage Drakes are territorial pack creatures, but they are quite gregarious, for merciless predators. It is quite common to see Rage Drakes that are used as pets and attack beasts by various humanoids. If a drake has been raised from the egg by a tribe of different monsters, then that Drake will consider them its allies in battle for their pack ferocity power, and will fight furiously at their side. An encounter with some orcs is often 'spiced up' by a brace of Rage Drakes.
