Mechanists Lappet +1
- Cost: 3,750 gp
- Weight: 2 lbs.
- Family: Mechanists Lappet
The Mechanists Lappet is the subject of an amazing amount of controversy among users of magic, despite its fairly simple effects and often humble appearance. A Mechanists Lappet fits itself into the aura of the attuned owner and attaches itself to one or more of their other magic items. Once it has settled in, it serves as a kind of 'amplifier' for the connection between the wearer and that other item.
The controversy arises because 'pure' users of magic, ie, spellcasters, often feel that a 'Mechanists Lappet' is an abomination of their craft, taking all the art and beauty out of their Working and making their craft crude, diminished, and mechanical. This is even the origin of the name 'Mechanist', as many spellcasters feel that users of damage-dealing magic items are wretched imitators and poseurs, and much contempt is expressed.
Now, many users of magic items don't care a whit about the hurt feelings of a bunch of finger-wigglers, and thus, Mechanist Lappets are items which many adventurers have as part of their arsenal.
A Mechanist Lappet always loops around the forehead and base of the skull, for reasons far too complicated to venture into here. They always have a flap, drape, or other sort of portion that lays over the back of the neck, top of the spine, and sometimes even the upper back. Lappets come in every manner of construction and appearance imaginable, ranging from lacy 'trains' cascading down the wearer's back to flowing fabric cascades to sensible canvas neck-coverings to leather neck-flaps to bossed metal collars suitable for a suit of war mail. No matter their appearance, they all perform their duties quietly and well, despite drawing the ire of 'real' users of 'Magick'.
The owner of this magic item must wear it continuously for 24 hours to attune it to their aura, and until that time has passed, it provides no benefits to the wearer.
