Condition Severity: Moderate
You are being wrestled to the ground by an opponent.
Effects
- The Grappled condition is the intermediate outcome of the Grapple combat maneuver.
- If you are the creature who has been Grappled:
- You may make attacks with Light or Close weapons, or cast spells with no somatic components, without penalty.
- Attacks with weapons which are not Light weapons or in the Close weapon group suffer a -8 penalty to their attack rolls.
- Spells with somatic components require a concentration check (DC 10 + grappler's Maneuver Offense + spell level), or the spell fails and the action to cast it is wasted. This concentration check counts as the Combat Casting check for casting the spell in melee (i.e. it is not in addition to a combat casting check).
- You cannot make any attacks with an off-hand weapon (i.e. two-weapon fighting).
- You cannot use thrown or projectile weapons.
- You cannot make attacks of opportunity.
- If you attempt to attack any creature other than the creature which initiated the Grappled condition against you, you provoke an attack of opportunity from the grappling creature (with each attack action, not each attack; i.e. a full attack action, regardless of how many attacks it might include, is only 1 action, and only provokes once.)
- If you attack the creature which is grappling you, you are always considered to be threatening it, even if it is using reach or some other means of grappling you that doesn't require it to be adjacent to you. Some monsters may have specific rules which prevent non-adjacent attacks like this, and monster-specific abilities always override other rules.
- If you wish to move from your space, you must first succeed on an opposed Might skill check. If you succeed, you may move up to half your speed, and the enemy which grappled you may elect to follow with you as a free action. If you fail the check, you cannot move, and your move action is wasted.
- You take a -4 penalty to your AC.
- You cannot use Stealth to hide from the creature Grappling you, even if you have an ability such as "Hide in Plain Sight".
- If you become invisible, you gain a +2 bonus to your Maneuver Offense and Escape Artist skill checks for purposes of escaping the Grappled condition, but receive no other benefits.
- If you are the creature who initiated the Grappled condition:
- You may spend a free action during your turn to immediately end a Grappled condition that you initiated.
- If you wish to move from your space, you must first succeed on an opposed Might skill check. If you succeed, you may move up to half your speed, dragging your Grappled victim along with you. If you fail the check, you cannot move, and your move action is wasted.
- You may spend a standard action to make a new Grapple check (rolling 1d20 + your Maneuver Offense), with a DC equal to the Maneuver Defense of the creature you have Grappled. If you are successful, you escalate the Grappled condition to the Pinned condition, and deal your combat maneuver damage to your target. If you fail this check, your victim is still Grappled by you.
- You may spend a standard action to deal your normal weapon damage to the creature you are Grappling. There is no to-hit roll, and you cannot critically hit with this attack, but the attack automatically hits.
- You take a -2 penalty to your AC.
Ended By
If the ability, trap, or effect description includes specific directions for how the condition is ended, then that is the primary means of ending this condition. In many cases, it is the only way to end the condition. If nothing is specifically listed for ending the condition, then the following methods can be used to end it, instead:
- You can spend a move action to attempt an Escape Artist check, with a DC equal to the Maneuver Defense of the creature that Grappled you. If you are successful, the Grappled condition immediately degrades to the Grabbed condition.
- If you succeed by 5 or more, the Grappled condition immediately ends.
- You can spend a standard action to attempt a Grapple check (rolling 1d20 + your Maneuver Offense), with a DC equal to the Maneuver Defense of the creature that Grappled you. If you are successful, the Grappled condition immediately degrades to the Grabbed condition.
- If you succeed by 5 or more, the Grappled condition immediately ends.
- No more than one escape artist check to escape a grapple can be attempted per round, even if you have more move actions available.
- If you wish to inflict the Grappled condition back on the enemy grappling you, you must first completely escape from the enemy grappling you. You cannot initiate a grapple when you are already grappled.
- The Grappled condition automatically ends if the creature which Grappled you is slain.
- If not cleared, the Grappled condition automatically ends at the end of the encounter.
