A Crown of Swords is a deadly item when worn by a strong melee attacker, and more than useful when worn by nearly anyone. The magic of the Crown, once a 24 hour attunement period has passed, allows the wearer to strike back when they are attacked. This is counted as an Attack of Opportunity, and follows the rules for such an attack, with the major exception that at higher levels, the mightier Crowns allow you to attack against a foe who is attacking you at range.

For purposes of a Crown of Swords, an attack means any damaging or deleterious effect inflicted on you, such as damage, ability damage, status effects, forced movement, etc. In all cases, you may choose to attack or not, at your discretion.

The attack allowed by a Crown of Swords is treated as an attack of opportunity. It is resolved against AC and is affected by in-corporeality, etc, as normal. If made at range, there is no range penalty. The damage type is of exactly the same type as is inflicted by your currently equipped, proficiently wielded weapon. In order to use a Crown of Swords you must have an available attack of opportunity, and if you run out of attacks of opportunity in a round, you may not make an attack provided by a Crown of Swords.

The owner of this magic item must wear it continuously for 24 hours to attune it to their aura, and until that time has passed, it provides no benefits to the wearer.
