This rod is made of wood and bone twisted and woven together in a splintering spiral, the whole roughly bound with some kind of sinew. The rod is capped with a child-sized skull, bony jaw agape in a permanent scream of agony and terror. The thing is unpleasant to handle, giving off shivers like an animal in the last stages of some slow disease.

Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast a Crushing Despair spell, using up one charge from the rod.

When the wielder pronounces the command word, a phrase like a bleak dirge, the skull seems to swell slightly. The wielder presents the ghastly thing toward their soon-to-be victims.

An invisible cone of despair causes great sadness in all subjects caught wholly or partially within a 30-foot cone adjacent to the wielders space (a 6 x 6 x 6 space.) Each affected creature suffers damage according to the creator level of the rod as quiescent (energy, rare) damage, as they battle against the urge to just fall down and die on the spot. A Will save against the DC based on the creator level of the rod (described below) lowers the tide of dolorous woe to half damage.

You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
