Rod of Restoration
Rod of Restoration
- Cost: 22,500 gp
- Weight: 1 lbs.
A rod of restoration appears to be made of a single piece of white metal, smooth and cylindrical of shape. It is just over 21 inches long, and approximately 1 inch in diameter. At the ends, there are golden caps in the shape of disks, their edges ridged. On the tops of each cap are sculpted images of birds in flight.
Wielders of this rod can utter a command word as a standard action to cast a Restoration spell, using up one charge from the rod. If the wielder chooses, they may expend 5 charges from the item and cast the effect as a swift action.
However, since the rod only 'borrows' this might, the beings involved levy additional requirements upon the wielder of the rod. Rather than acting automatically to lend its effects, the wielder of the rod must first roll a Bailiwick skill check against a Hard DC for the Challenge Rating (CR) of the effect laid upon the victim. This can be the CR of the creature or area which inflicted the effect, the CR of the campaign, or the CR of the victim, whichever is highest, or a CR assigned by the GM at their discretion. If the victim has various effects of different CR's, the wielder of the rod may choose which effect they work on each time they activate the rod.
This can be a difficult check, but purchasing a more powerful rod will add a scaling bonus to this check, as follows: higher level versions of the Rod of Restoration add a circumstance bonus to your bailiwick skill check, specifically for curing these sorts of effects, equal to 3 + the creator level of the rod divided by 7 (dropping fractions). Thus, at creator levels 1 through 6, the bonus is +3, at levels 7 through 13 the bonus is +4, at levels 14 through 20 it is +5, at levels 21 through 27 it is +6, at levels 28 through 34 it is +7, and at creator level 35 it is +8. If this check is failed, even by one, the charge is expended and there is no effect, although you can certainly try again with a new standard action.
Users of this rod are not required to make a Use Magic Device check, even if they do not have access to this spell via their character class. This check is replaced by the bailiwick skill check described above (though it is required by any user of the rod, not just those who would normally be forced to make the Use Magic Device check).
If the bailiwick skill check succeeds, then the rod can be used to provide one of the following effects per activation:
- immediately cure any one weak or moderate status condition on the target, except Ability Dilution, Ability Damage, Essence Suppression, Essence Omission, Tainted, Poisoned, Infected, Diseased, Bruised, Bleed, Singed, Burned, Impaired, or Crippled.
- restore one lost class feature, feat, spell level, or racial trait, caused by Essence Suppression, Essence Omission, or Essence Destruction.
- remove any Ability Dilution or Ability Damage from all of the target's ability scores.
- remove all Ability Drain from a single ability score (your choice if more than one is drained).
If a targeted creature has spell resistance, the wielder of the rod must first make a Bailiwick skill check against the target's Maneuver Defense. If they equal or exceed this number, the spell is resolved against the target as normal. If the check fails, the spell is cast from the rod (using up a charge) but has no effect on the target creature.
You can purchase this rod at a higher creator level than the minimum required to cast the spell. Doing so increases the potency of the spell as described above, but also increases the cost, as follows:
